Participatory Issues-

Participatory Background-

Case Study 1- HAPPY (A mental health documentary)

The documentary genre for this short documentary is a biographic genre. This is because there are people getting asked questions about there mental health issues and then they speak about how they cope and have dealt with it. The mode for this documentary would be reflective. I think this because they are talking about what they do to deal with their mental health issues. The conventions that were mostly used in this documentary were interviews. This is because the the people in this documentary were mostly getting asked questions.

Case Study 2- Just Skate (A skateboarding documentary)

The documentary genre for this short documentary is biographic. This is because they are documenting their life of skateboarding. The mode for this documentary is reflective as the people in the documentary are showing people what the skateboarding community is like. The conventions that were mostly used in this documentary were interviews as the people skateboarding were getting asked questions

Elements of Identity

The main elements of identity is what makes the subject stand out and what also gets the subjects point across. This can be seen wit elements such as, Type, Colour, Font, Size etc. The purpose of Identity is to show what your point is and what you want to show.

Below is one of the identities i chose:

About - 38 Degrees

In this logo here there are many elements of identities shown:

38 Degrees is a British not-for-profit political-activism organisation. It describes itself as "progressive" and claims to "campaign for fairness, defend rights, promote peace, preserve the planet and deepen democracy in the UK".

  • The colour orange- They could have used to colour showing to match the 38 degrees which could be seen as a high temperature.

  • People, Power, Change- This is the catchphrase they use to make people understand what point they are trying to get across

  • The colour white- This is an easy colour to read as the background colour is orange

  • The Sans Serif Type in bold- This also makes the writing easy to read

Experimental Identity Poster

This is my attempt at making my own Idedentity poster

Inflation was the subject that I chose, I created this poster on Adobe illustrator. I chose this word as a social issue as there is a lot to talk about and how it can effect people lives. The point that I was trying to get across was, if prices keep going up it will just be worthless once again. My honest opinions on this poster is that people may not understand what the subject is or the point I am trying to get across.

But something I do like about it is that because the word inflation means the prices going up, I made it so my text starts off small then goes up. By using the type tool I enlarged the writing from starting small to big, this is also so people understand the point I am trying to get across. I also spelt business wrong as I was sort of rushing which I should not be doing.

Creating this poster was sort of easy as I chose a subject fast and had a rough Idea in my head. But there was also negatives for me, which was trying to come up of a subject on my own, I had this same problem last year and it had an effect on my grade as I kept changing subjects and could not come up of a subject myself.

Things I done well

  • Finding a subject fast

  • Given an Idea so I could work faster

Things I need to work on

  • Thinking of my OWN ideas

  • Not changing subjects as it slows done the process of me working

Documentaries

The purpose of documentary research:

  • Documentaries are a form of research

  • It is Primary research in to a topic that is guided by pre-production

  • Research allows you to decide on a specific focus for you documentary

  • Research helps you find subject to interview/film

  • Most of the time research allows a filmmaker to find a subject that needs addressing that might not have been addressed before

There are two different types of research

Primary which is:

  • Information that is sourced by yourself, this includes, questionnaires, one on one interviews, focus groups and vox pops

Secondary research which is:

  • Information that is already sourced by others, this includes books, websites, journals, reviews and studies

Review analysis on Who Is America:

Negative Review:

This person gave Who Is America season 1 a bad review. This is because the person thought that the show was confusing. This person was always saying that this show could be a waste of time to them as they are also a busy parent.

Jeff F's Positive Review:

Jeff gave the season 1 review a 5 star rating. This is because he thought the show was very funny and entertaining. This is a positive review. This can also be used as a recommendation to the show.

My Review

Based on the reviews I have seen I have seen more positives then negatives. This makes me assume that this series is good and is not a waste of time.

What is Ethical research?

  • Ethical research is what strengthens the points being made in the documentary

  • Sometimes research can be used to suggest a different point of view

  • Unethical use of research can lead to documentaries not being broadcasted or streamed

Ethical Interviewing

  • Filmmakers can be sued by their subjects for libel or defamation or character slander

Framing an Interview

  • Mid shots and close shots give the most natural look to a documentary/interview

  • Three Point Lighting

  • Looking towards the camera or off camera

  • Make sure the interviewer stays quiet when the interview subject is answering the questions

  • Make your interviewer feel relaxed

B-roll

What is B-roll?

  • The term B-roll refers to footage accompanying footage intercut with a main shot in an interview or documentary

  • For example if your interview subject is talking to the camera may be A-roll. This is because any alternative footage such as cutaways to surrounding or significant places will be your B-roll.

B-roll Purposes

  • Supplement the A-roll (main footage) to produce a more captivating film by giving meaning to what you are trying to say

  • B-roll is also referred to as "safety footage

  • If there is moments that work for video and not audio could mean that something is distracting in the background, or maybe slipped out of focus. B-roll footage can be used to mask out the shot

  • You can also change the flow of the edit. You can shorten verbose answers, or hide any long pauses

B-roll task

Bullying/beautiful

There are a few things that are positive and a few things that are negative:

Positives:

  • The lighting shown in the interviews is placed ell as the brightness is not too high or too low on the bullying documentary. This makes it easier for the viewers to see what they are looking at.

  • The interviews are done well as we are shown the questions that they need to answer, and they also edited it so it is interview after interview.

  • The questions and answers throughout this video were asked maturely and answered maturely, this shows the professionalism used throughout the video.

Negatives

  • Throughout the video there are some shots that are a little bit blurry making it harder for the viewers to see what the subject is.

  • Also when the interviewers were asked questions they did not look at the camera or the interviewer but were looking elsewhere.

Experimental Jetset

These are some of the photos I have chosen for experimental jetset. This is a dutch design group and there photos from experimental jetset mostly involve type. This could mean they want you to understand what they are seeing by reading instead of viewing the photos.

The 1st Photo I chose:

  • I like this photo as the colours used for the text stands out which makes it easier to read

  • I also like the first photo as the pictures surround the text which shows what the main subject is about

The 2nd Photo I chose:

  • I like this picture a lot because it is very easy to understand what the main subject is. Which is the letter Z

  • The text is also large which makes it easier to understand.

Constructivists

  • Definition- A style or movement in which assorted mechanical objects are combined into abstract mobile structural forms. The movement originated in Russia in the 1920s and has influenced many aspects of modern architecture and design.

EL Lissitzky Inspired

El Lissitzky, was a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer, polemicist and architect.

  • Born- 23rd November 1890

  • Passed away- 30 December 1941

  • This is one of EL Lissitzky's work pieces. as you can see in this picture he uses a variety of colours and majority of text is black in in bold writing which makes it easy to read, which I also like as people can understand better

  • Another reason I like this constructivists work is because It is easy to understand what the main subject is for russians

Demographics and Psychographics

Demographics and Psychographics

  • Demographics describes who people are. Demographics are also stats and statistics that describe areas populations and also their characteristics. Demographics also analyse the study of a population examples of this are, age, race, gender, education and income. Demographic data is also more essential for businesses, organisations and governments to make decisions. One way you can collect this information is by surveys.

  • Psychographics describes what people care about. From a marketing perspective psychographics are usually used to explain why people buy a product, and the attitudes, opinions and personality traits that drive them towards a product. Psychographics are more abstract then demographics because they are multi- dimensional by nature and cover subtle elements of what makes a person tick. Psychographics also also studying people based on their psychological characteristics, such as their goals, traits, values, desires, interests and lifestyle choices.

Free Solo 500 Word Essay

Free Solo follow the physical and emotional journey of Alex Honnold as he attempts to climb El Capitan without any safety gear. However, the film shows the audience expectations by presenting a narrative that focuses on Honnold's personality, background, and motivation. This unconventional storytelling approach respects both the subject and viewers of the film, allowing them to fully engage with the present moment instead of anticipating future events. The documentary also challenges viewers with thought provoking questions, such as the role of Honnold's girlfriend, Sanni McCandless, and the impact of pursuing a passion on personal relationships. Rather than resorting to cliches, the filmmakers delve into deeper and more compelling inquiries about love and commitment. captures. If the documentary were to capture Honnold's potential death, what implications would that have for Chin and his crew?

However, while Chin's contemplations were , he also had the fortune of having Alex Honnold as a subject. Honnold's personality is one that stands out, perhaps as a necessity for someone who traverses a 3000 foot rock. Chin recognised this and allowed Honnold to be authentic. He could have exploited Honnold or exaggerated his character, but instead, Chin respected him enough to let him tell his own story in his own unique, sardonic, and memorable voice.

The carefulness of this documentary reaches its peak in the final climactic sequence, where Honnold successfully climbs El Capitan. What sets this sequence apart is that instead of the expected dramatic score accompanying shots of majestic nature, the sounds of Honnold's laboured breath punctuate the composition. The unique combination of elegance and inelegance, along with the intimate portrayal of Honnold's passion, makes Free Solo an exceptional documentary.

Unlike generic films of its genre, Free Solo avoids recycling tired formulas. It offers a viewing experience unlike any other, which is much-needed in today's oversaturated and filtered world.

Social Media Videos

Yoplait

Mum-shaming is a term used to describe the often-precise and patronising advice given to mothers on how to parent their children, and the shame that comes with not adhering to it. Yoplait wanted to reach a new or unfamiliar audience, so they decided to engage with a very common topic of conversation: "mum-shaming." Planning for my Dramatisation Doc

 POVERTY

For my dramatisation documentary I was going to have me talking about my problems whilst growing up with poverty and how everything has changed now. I feel like me talking at the start will try to open peoples feelings so they can open up about any problems they have had growing up or even now.

Below are some subjects I will  be talking about and also asking people about:

  • Parents needing to provide for their kids
  • Poverty can lead to many other issues, issues like:
  • Discrimination
  • Exploitation
  • Depression
  • Substance Abuse

GLOBAL POVERTY AND HEALTH

  • Children living in poverty tend to have more health issues and are at a higher risk of developing diseases due to inadequate treatment.

  • Poor health conditions can keep children out of school for weeks, or even months, dragging them further into an already weak system.

  • Our programs offer children not only health and dental services, but also psychological wellness programs and activities so they can focus on education, family support, or simply being a child.

GLOBAL POVERTY AND EDUCATION

  • The issue of education and poverty is not just about poor education systems.

  • Poor education and lack of support in these communities results in children not attending school, falling behind and eventually dropping out.

  • Education is crucial for children to gain the skills they need to transform their lives and break poverty cycles for themselves and their communities.

GLOBAL POVERTY AND EMPLOYMENT

  • Many children living in poverty have never known a life other than the poverty and hardship they face today.

  • One of the greatest gifts we can provide to a child living in poverty is a vision for a brighter future.

  • Through our empowerment programs, we build social responsibility, build leadership, and provide employment training to give children the hope and confidence they need to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.

GLOBAL POVERTY AND TECHNOLOGY

  • We live in an information-driven society. Access to technology is essential for communities to progress.

  • Some parts of the world are connected to mobile telephones and computers. Others are completely disconnected from technology, leaving them to languish in poverty.

GLOBAL POVERTY AND HUNGER

  • Hunger is not just about not having enough food. It’s also about not having the right food. In some parts of the world, there’s a food shortage, while in other parts, there are foods that don’t have enough vitamins, minerals, or nutrition, resulting in an obesity epidemic. Learn more about food disparity and what you can do to help.

Social Campaign Name and Logo

Social Campaign Name- Poverty Problems

Above is my campaign pitch and things I done well and need to add or improve.

  • Firstly it is clear what my campaign pitch is about and what my main goal is. I also have a clear understanding.

  • I know what my target audience is and who I am trying to spread my word to. I just might possibly change the age to 16 plus.

  • At first I did not have many links but after doing some research I found some, one is NSPCC. Another one is Oxfam and World Relief.

NSPCC

  • NSPCC is a childrens charity who have been looking out for children over 130 years.
  • NSPCC have helped make over 6.6 million children suffer from abuse

Oxfam

  • Oxfam is a global movement of millions of people working together to end poverty
  • They help with subjects like:

  1. Safe and clean water
  2. Food
  3. Tackling climate change
  4. Women and gender justice
  5. Responding to emergencies

  • I have a serious approach as the subject I am talking about is a very serious subject, and I also want people to take what I say seriously.

  • I have thought of suitable research which is going to me asking people if they have had any experiences themself or know anyone who has.

Below is my Ideas and my social campaign logo

These are both the logos I created on Adobe Illustrator. I mainly used the enlarge tool and also the type tool, so making both of them was not really a problem it was just me deciding on which one to choose.

The first logo was my first Idea of the logo I wanted to do, but then after getting feedback from students and teachers I figured out it could be too much and a more basic logo could look better (which is the one below). I am still slightly debating whether I should choose the logo withe the pictures at the bottom or to keep it plain.

I also decided that the writing on my logo should be big and bold so people viewing it will understand the point that I am trying to get across. For the logo at the bottom I may even put an explanation mark on the other side to add more awareness. And for the logo at the top I might just remove two pictures and keep one at the bottom.

Topic Research

Questions to ask about poverty and education

  • What is Poverty and how does it effect education?

For This Question I want to hear peoples opinions on Poverty and how it effects kids education.

  • What Challenges do students from low-income families face in obtaining a quality education?

For this question there is no correct answer, it is mainly what people think the biggest problem.

  • How does poverty effect a child's ability to learn?

  • What is the impact of poverty on early childhood education?

  • Have you or anyone you know had any problems with education due to poverty?

For this question I want people to express any problems they have had due to poverty and how it has effected them

I might possibly even talk about self experiences and even people I know who's education has been effected by poverty.

Expert Organisations

1st Organisation

Also for my topic research there are many organisations that I have included, them being: NEU which is (National Education Union)

This organisation is the largest education union which is representing teachers, lecturers, support staff and school leaders in maintained and independent schools and colleges across the UK.

International

The NEU internationalism sits at the heart of their values. As an education trade union they believe that defending human rights including trade union rights and the rights to education must be a global endeavour.

The NEU are proud to belong to Education International - the Federation of Education Unions representing 32m teachers and support staff across 178 countries. Together, they are trying to protect and advance every educator’s rights by responding to sister unions’ calls to action, advocating for human rights, providing critical support during crises and emergencies and working together on development cooperation projects

2nd Organisation

Another Organisation I am using is, CPAG. CPAG stands for Child Poverty Action Group. This organisation is based on helping child poverty.

Founded in 1965, CPAG is one of the largest and most influential non-profit organisations in the country dedicated to lifting families out of poverty and preventing child poverty. With the support of thousands of donors and supporters, CPAG has helped over 100,000 children and families out of poverty.

CPAG is one of the UK’s pioneers in the welfare rights movement, offering practical advice on how to claim entitlements for people on low incomes. In the past 12 months, CPAG advice services has provided specialist casework support in over 9,000 cases, supporting over 1,500 organisations across the UK and supporting over 36,900 people in the process. CPAG have piloted welfare rights for parents in school environments. This enabled them to reach groups that are less likely to go to mainstream advice agencies, such as women and young people from a minority ethnic background, and are more likely to access welfare rights advice when it’s available at school. CPAG advisers recovered over £497,000 of annual benefits payments last year in 300 welfare rights advice sessions at London schools and at Tower Hamlets food banks.

Analysing A Similar Item

This is an Item I found online which I really like. I like this picture because I feel it relates heavily to the subject. I chose which is Poverty and Education. As you can see in the picture the girl has got a bag on her back and it has been enlarged. The ideas I get from that is that whilst at or going to education she has to carry all her problems in her bag to education with her. And the big one I can see is Poverty which is like I said related to the subject I am doing. Poverty can also lead to many other problems which are shown on the girls bag. Examples being, hunger, neglect. homelessness and many more. So I chose to analyse this item as it relates to the subject that I chose. This picture can also be inspired to loads of young children/ audience.

Storyboard

Documentary Items

Logo

This is my first item which is my Logo. I used alliteration in my logo to make it more memorable and catchy.

Slogan

"Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime"

This is the slogan I came up with. What I mean by this is that poverty is what is causing revolution and crime, kids growing up in poverty can effect their school life which can then lead onto them doing bad things in the future.

Poster Ideas

This is an Idea of a poster I would like to create. As my poster is about poverty and education this has inspired me of a poster idea.

Poverty Problems Rough Cut

Above is the rough cut for my final documentary. The process of me making and editing this dramatisation had a load of ups and downs but in the end I managed to get something out. This was all made on Adobe Premiere Pro which is an app I am now used to, meaning I should have managed to get this all done way before deadline time.

SWOT Analysis

This is my SWOT Analysis and the feedback I got given back to me. After receiving this information I am going to take it into consideration and make sure that my final cut is made to the best of its ability. There are some points that I agree on and some points I don't agree on. Starting with the weaknesses I would say that I think making the music in the background smoother is a good point and also the same with the transitions. I also agree that I should work on and improve my timing. The positives though are that classmates feel that I made the music match well with the theme, and also how it is an eye catching dramatisation. People also feel that the story and emotion of my documentary is shown well.

Poverty Problems Final Cut

Social Issues Evaluation

For my whole social issues topic I wanted to base it on how poverty can effect kids in education and also in life. By the end of this I wanted to have completed a documentary of interviews and the publics opinion. In the end I was told I did not complete a final documentary and that it was all dramatisation and also fabrication, meaning that my whole documentary was a lie. In the build up of making my documentary I got told there was no problem, my rough cut was completed weeks before my final cut was even made, and i thought if there was any problems i would have been told them by now. Now there is possibilities of me failing the whole subject. My B-Roll was included in my documentary. In the end I did change the title of it to dramatisation.

The aim of my documentary was to show everyone the problems caused by poverty and how it effects children in school and also in life. Choosing a topic for my documentary was not as hard as I thought it would be, this is because last year it was difficult for me to come up with an idea and I kept changing throughout. The genre of my documentary was emotional and serious. This is because I wanted people to take more action to help with poverty problems. I also planned at the start to try and make a poster as well as a documentary. The process of me editing my documentary did take me a long time and throughout I did not see many problems with it. I made an experimental poster at the start of the project and at first I did want that as my main project as well as a documentary. During the process of this topic I managed to lose my poster which effected me.

There was many things that influenced me to do a topic on poverty. Many people around me have had problems growing up due to poverty examples being, lack of food and water, no shelter and many more. Seeing these things growing up really showed me that the government do not put in as much help as they can. At the start f the topic I did have a plan once I chose the social issue poverty. Knowing I had to do a documentary I wanted to do as much research as I can so I could put it into my documentary. After doing my research on statistics etc I then wanted to start planning out how I want to do my documentary, I had a few things in mind and my first one was to interview people and this is the one I chose, my second idea was to make my documentary very realistic, meaning I wanted to be in it myself and use voiceovers etc, but in the end it was too complicated for me to do.
